Pilates Based Physical Therapy

Pilates is an exercise regimen that was first developed for rehabilitation in the early 20th century. It has since become a powerful rehabilitation tool with significant benefits to the patient. The Pilates principles address posture, muscle performance and motor control, the same concepts that form the basis of most orthopedic rehabilitation and therapy. Pilates based physical therapy may be used to successfully treat many common conditions including, but not limited to:

  • Low back pain
  • Sports & performance-related injuries
  • Pre- & postsurgical conditions
  • Shoulder & knee pain
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Joint instability/hypermobility
  • Balance disorders
  • Chronic & acute pain
  • Arthritis & joint pain
  • Repetitive-use syndromes

2Do I need a doctor’s order to start physical therapy?
No. In the state of Pennsylvania, a doctor’s order is not needed in order to begin physical therapy services. However, an order or prescription may be needed after 90 days of treatment. Some exceptions apply, so please check with your insurance company if you are seeking out of network re-imbursement. Please note, a referral to a physician may be suggested during your evaluation if necessary.
3Do you take health insurance?
No. Mindful Movement offers fee-for-service physical therapy services. You may pay by cash, check or credit card for physical therapy. Mindful Movement does not accept patients that are Medicare beneficiaries, when the treatment required is medically necessary and covered by Medicare. Most health insurance companies have unique requirements pertaining to physical therapy coverage. 4What may I expect at my first visit?
During your first visit, you will be evaluated by a licensed physical therapist who is also a Polestar certified instructor of Pilates for rehabilitation. During this initial evaluation, we will gather information about your injury or condition and evaluate your body in order to determine the best treatment plan. Please come in exercise clothes so the therapist may fully evaluate your injury or condition. Following the initial evaluation, time will be spent discussing your injury/condition and an individualized treatment plan will be provided based on your needs and goals. The goal of Pilates based rehabilitation is to help each patient return to full activity in the most efficient and effective manner, and to educate each patient on taking an active role in his recovery and prevention of further injuries.
5What are subsequent treatments like?
We use a nontraditional, holistic, approach to rehabilitation that focuses on manual therapy as well as functional training and movement reeducation to allow a smooth transition from rehabilitation to fitness. Patients are empowered to take charge of their own recovery and restore their overall fitness and well-being. We offer individualized care as our physical therapist works with only one patient at a time.
6How long will I be going to Physical Therapy?
Because each individual’s case is different, it is impossible to predict the exact number of sessions needed to reach your personalized goals. Most patients typically see improvement in symptoms after 6-8 sessions or about a 3-4 week time period. Many will have drastic improvements in their first week. Your experience in physical therapy serves to build a personalized plan for long term management of your condition and prevent the need for continued care. You will be empowered with the knowledge and skills needed to help you stay mobile, healthy and active for as long as you choose.
